HEALTH SERVICES

The Balearic Islands have a dense network of health care facilities, which provide guests with medical and pharmaceutical care during their visit. Both the public and private health care facilities are up to date. Please be sure to have the necessary documents for one of these services before you embark on your journey.

SAFETY

112 EMERGENCIES TEL. 
In emergency situations, you can ask for immediate help dialing 112, the emergency service of the Balearic Islands. The call is free, and you will be quickly catered for in one of these four languages (Spanish, Catalan, English or German). This number is used to coordinate all calls to ambulances, fire brigades and security forces to ensure a rapid and effective response to all type

TAXI

The taxi fleet is comprised of more than 50 cars, half of which are equipped with radio. Taxis are white with a colour stripes. They display the coat of arms of their municipality. In tourist areas you will find a taxi at any time.

MONEY

Mallorca has a wide network of ATMs all over the island available 24 hours a day. These ATMs usually accept all types of cards to withdraw money and most establishments accept credit/debit cards. Among the most widely accepted are Visa, MasterCard, Maestro... You often need to show your passport or other photo ID. There are currency exchange offices at the airport and some hotels also offer this service. 

TAX FREE

VAT or Value Added Tax is applied to all products and services. The percentage varies according to the type of product. For citizens resident in non-EU countries on a tourist visit, VAT can be refunded if certain conditions are met. Purchases must be made in shops that offer the DIVA tax free electronic form. In Spain, the validation must be done through the DIVA interactive terminals (normally located in airports and ports) before leaving the European Union. It is recommended to plan ahead for the time it will take to complete the procedure.

TIPS

It is usual to leave tips in bars and restaurants and in general, for any kind of service (taxis, hotels, etc.). There is no established percentage.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM TAX (ITS, for its Spanish acronym)

From the 1st of July 2016, the Sustainable Tourism Tax is applied to all stays in tourist accommodations in Mallorca. This contribution aims to make important investments in order to compensate for the territorial and environmental impact of tourism.

OPENING HOURS

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION:
The opening hours are usually from 9:00 to 14:00 hours.
RESTAURANTS: 
The kitchen is normally open from 13:00 to 15:00 hours and from 20:00 to 23:00 hours. Some restaurants in tourist areas offer more flexible hours. It is increasingly common to find restaurants with kitchens open all day.
CAFÉS AND BARS: 
Opening hours vary a lot but you can always find a place open.
SHOPS: 
Business hours are normally from 10:00 to 13:00 hours and from 17:00 to 20:00 hours. In the areas with the highest influx of tourists and in Palma city it is common to find shops with extended opening hours that do not close at midday. Department stores and supermarkets have continuous opening hours that start around 9:00 until 21:00 hours.
BANKS: 
Most banks open from 8:30 to 14:00 hours. Some of them also offer their services some afternoons.

DRINKING WATER

The tap water in Mallorca is mostly safe to consume and can be used for drinking and cooking. However, most people who live here buy bottled water.
